Abstract

The purpose of this study is to perform a longitudinal comparison of the feminization of poverty phenomenon in the United States and Korea. The study uses social exclusion as a multi-dimensional approach through which to explore the nature of poverty in these contexts. Social exclusion is measured through five sub-dimensions: finance, housing, employment, health and social participation. The analysis confirms that the ¡®feminization of poverty¡¯ thesis is also valid within a social exclusion discourse. In both countries, women experience heightened social exclusion and the gender gap has widened over time. The dynamics of social exclusion also support the phenomenon of the ¡°feminization of social exclusion¡±. In addition, levels of social exclusion in Korea are slightly higher than that of the US in all sub-dimensions, except financial exclusion. Therefore, government efforts toward reducing poverty among women must go beyond programs alleviating financial hardship to encompass a more multi- dimensional approach to social exclusion.
